In a major initiative aimed at improving environmental health, preventing disease outbreaks, and fostering community responsibility, the Bia East District Assembly has successfully organized a clean-up exercise to mark the national sanitation day exercise across various communities in the district.
The clean-up exercise brought together Assembly staff, Environmental Health Officers, traditional authorities, market women, youth groups, security personnel, and local residents who actively participated in clearing public spaces, desilting choked gutters, and sweeping major streets.
The sanitation drive was carried out simultaneously across several major towns and marketing centers, including Adabokrom, Camp 15 Junction, and surrounding communities. Participants cleared blocked drainage channels along major access roads and market squares to prevent waterlogging and flooding during heavy rains. Teams focused on thorough cleaning around health centers, school grounds, lorry parks, and local market facilities to reduce health hazards and vector breeding grounds.
In addition, the environmental Health Officers conducted door-to-door public education on proper waste segregation, household latrine maintenance, and safe water storage practices.
Leadership addressing the event emphasized that maintaining a clean environment is a shared responsibility between local government authorities and the public and stressed that “Sanitation is fundamental to the health, dignity, and economic productivity of our district. Clean-up exercises should not be seen as a one-off event, but as an essential civic duty. The Assembly will continue to enforce environmental health bye-laws while providing the necessary logistics to keep Bia East clean.”
